The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has praised the suggestion to decriminalize sports wagering in India, a proposition presented by a panel led by Justice R.M. Lodha. CII has advocated for legalization since 2012, contending that a controlled betting sector could furnish a substantial income stream for athletic advancement and other public endeavors. They maintain that this framework has demonstrated effectiveness in other nations, where funds generated from wagering have been utilized to finance infrastructure enhancements and stimulate travel.
CII’s declaration underscored the possible advantages of employing betting proceeds to reinforce various sports disciplines and elevate tourism amenities. They also stressed the necessity of cooperation with stakeholders within the sports ministry before any legislation is officially submitted to the Legislature.
This advancement follows a high-visibility controversy in 2015, where the proprietors of two prominent cricket clubs, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, were penalized for their participation in gambling on matches.
