Ontario Cracks Down on Celebrity Endorsements in Online Gambling Ads to Protect Youth

Ontario is implementing stricter regulations on internet gaming promotions to safeguard youth. Effective February 28, 2024, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) will prohibit the utilization of high-profile individuals and sports figures in digital gambling advertisements. The sole exemption will be for promotions that center on responsible gaming practices. This prohibition extends to other personalities who may hold allure for underage individuals, such as social media influencers, animated figures, and team emblems. The AGCO recognized this as an issue in April 2023, and subsequently, they have been in communication with all stakeholders: health institutions, responsible gaming specialists, the gaming enterprises themselves, advertising agencies, and the general public.

The AGCO is concerned that featuring renowned athletes and celebrities in these advertisements increases the susceptibility of young individuals to gambling-related issues. “Adolescents and teenagers idolize these athletes and celebrities,” states Tom Mungham, the Chief Executive Officer of AGCO. “Therefore, we are implementing these supplementary measures to shield young individuals in Ontario by prohibiting these influential figures from appearing in online gambling advertisements.”

Ontarios gaming authority is serious about enforcement. They’ve established strict regulations for internet gambling companies, with a major focus on safeguarding youth. The use of social media personalities is prohibited, and promotional strategies aimed at underage individuals are strictly off-limits. Imagine juvenile-oriented vocabulary and advertisements appearing close to educational institutions? Absolutely not permitted. The AGCO is resolute, even imposing a substantial penalty on Apollo Entertainment for non-compliance. They are committed to ensuring online wagering remains secure and ethical for all Ontarians.
