A proposal to make sports betting legal in Kentucky has been approved by the Licensing, Occupations, and Administrative Regulations Committee and is now set to be debated by the entire House.

The proposal – House Bill 137, introduced by Adam Koenig – would permit racetracks and Kentucky Speedway to take sports wagers. Sports wagering would be overseen by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and subject to a 10.25% tax on bets placed in person.

Online wagering would also be permitted, but bettors would need to be verified at a racetrack or speedway. Online wagering revenue would be taxed at a rate of 14.25%.

The initial licensing cost for sports wagering would be $500,000, plus a $50,000 renewal fee.
